I know... I have quite a strong opinion about portfolio management within public organizations š .Ā Ā
Within the Public Prosecution Service, we have consciously chosen a specific approach and positioning. And guess what? I regularly get people visiting who want to get inspired . And to be honest - I really enjoy talking about my profession and how we approach portfolio management. š¤Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
āļø Writing plans ā start
What I often see (and hear): š Public organizations that are busy writing a plan or policy memo about how portfolio management should work.
Of course ā a solid professionalization process on paper is important. But honestly? Sometimes that planning gets completely stuck... š¹ In too much detail š¹ Or it becomes an unworkable policy monstrosity š¤ÆĀ Ā
š” My motto? Just start.
I believe in: š Try ā learn ā adapt ā try again.Ā
A lot of time is spent on flowcharts, process descriptions, gathering information.
But portfolio management for us is about: ā”ļø The process before a project starts.Ā Ā
And yes, even at the Public Prosecution Service it was not āperfectly arrangedā in the beginning. Instead of focusing on what was not possible, I started with what was there . ā However incomplete.Ā Ā Ā Ā
And from there? Step by step⦠šŖ Improved, adjusted, fine-tuned.
The first portfolio tables? Not an immediate success. But by continuing to try and adjust , we now have a workable model .Ā Ā

š 4 practical tips from our own kitchen:
1ļøā£ Create a weekly flow: Our rhythm is: š Monday = Portfolio table š Tuesday = processing pieces š§ Wednesday & Thursday = preparing for next weekĀ Ā
2ļøā£ Think in 3 tracks: š¹ Current year š¹ Next year š¹ Five years aheadĀ Ā
3ļøā£ Start early: Start the year ahead in January ā not Q3 or Q4.Ā Ā Ā Ā
4ļøā£ Fine-tuning is key: The process is never āfinishedā. You can write a lot about how it should be, but in the end it is just a matter of: ā”ļø Doing ā”ļø Learning ā”ļø AdjustingĀ
So... are you in doubt? š£ Don't write - start!Ā Ā
